The Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi has indiscriminately dumped 5,37,765 tonnes of copper slag in various locations, including the banks of the Uppar river, despite the fact that numerous research papers published in highly regarded international journals have confirmed that the dumping of slag in the open has a significant adverse environmental impact, the State government has told the Madras High Court.
